From Palaces and Ruins. /// Two woman contrast the Girón building, a brutalist complex at the Malecon, beautifully.

These 17 floors brutalist complex was the first coup de foudre in La Habana. Built in 1967 in the Vedado neighbourhood, the building faces the sea on the Malecon boulevard. Corroded by salt, rusty structural iron surfacing all over, the two blocks are connected by long claustrophobic corridors, constantly swept by the breeze, scoping the amazing waterfront through long embrasures worthy of a bunker.

This is an image from my first trips to Havana. I remember well standing in front of this mysterious big house, all windows and doors were locked, but it exerted a magical attraction on me and I took a heart and rang. Josi looked out of a window at the top and finally opened the door for me. A friendly relationship developed quickly between me, Jose and her husband Miquel, and I visited the two regular, photographing in the house. Miquel began telling me about his life, from his father who built the house, to Ché Guevara with whom he regularly played chess. I enjoyed the encounters. •This is a picture of Josi in her kitchen.
